Because of time constraints at many stations, with summer promotions in
full swing, we have found it necessary to cancel the job fair which was scheduled for
Saturday, June 21st. The next job
fair on the NJBA Calendar will be at Montclair University, co-sponsored by the New Jersey
Advertising Club. The date is October 23, 2003. Please
mark your calendars now for the event. The cost is $250.00 per employment unit. The
money goes to the students in the form of scholarships. Last year, students from 22
colleges attended the event. We will be
sending out forms and a spot for promotion purposes shortly. Once you receive the form, you can register.
Is It
For Sale, Or Already Sold?
Rumors have been flying around New Jersey Broadcast circles since the
NJBA convention concerning the sale of all the radio and TV stations in the Green Group.
The speculation is all over the place, however, South Jersey Radio is playing it very
close to the vest. When they have something to announce, they will announce it. Meanwhile, everyone is guessing.
Disney/ABC
Reverses Itself
In a surprise move, The Walt Disney Company, owners of ABC, has
removed itself from NAB membership over the NAB position on the 35% TV ownership cap. The
FCC raised the cap to 45% in its new rules, while the NAB has been working in Congress to
make the 35% cap the law of the land. NAB seems to be making progress. The Disney decision
was a sudden reversal of position. When the other TV and Radio nets pulled out of the NAB,
Disney said they would not. As late as last
week, the Disney Company restated that position. This week they resigned from the NAB
a
completely unexpected move.
XM Repeaters
Back Again
NAB has been focusing on Capitol Hill trying to hold the FCCs
feet to the fire as far as the temporary authority given to XM Satellite Radio to operate
fill in repeater stations. XM, on the other hand, has gotten a patent for equipment that
would allow them to insert local programming into their nationwide satellite network.
Congressmen Tauzin and Green have once again notified the FCC that XM should be forced to
disclose their plans concerning local inserts. Both Congressmen believe the final repeater
licenses should forbid XM from using the devices to carry local programming
NAB has concerns that XM, licensed as a national service, can and
will evolve into a local service in competition with local broadcasters and with no public
service requirements.
