Greater Media NJ Moves To Broadcast HD2

Greater Media has announced specific plans for HD and HD2 broadcasts for some of its FM stations in New Jersey. Greater Media will divide the digital channel, so that it’s regular Magic programming will be on the main channel, while it will broadcast a format called “Over Easy” on the HD2 channel of WMGQ, New Brunswick. In Dover, WDHA will air its regular rock programming on its main channel and will air a format called WDHA Live on HD2. This will be live rock performances.

GMI expects to announce more HD2 formats for its other New Jersey stations shortly. The Company has multicasts on the air in Boston, Detroit and Philadelphia. Meanwhile, WAWZ in Zarephath continues to broadcast in both HD and HD2.  WAWZ broadcasts its programming, for the entire family, on the primary channel and broadcasts their original format on their 2nd channel.

Bye, Bye WHWH

After 43 years on the air from Princeton, WHWH went off the air last month. The station was awarded an expanded band position at 1680 MHz five years ago. It  could then operate on both its regular band 1350 and 1680. However, the deal with the FCC, the goal of which was to ease clutter on the AM dial, any station awarded an expanded band signal, was charged with vacating and going dark on its original frequency. The station was originally owned by Nassau Broadcasting, and sold to Multicultural Broadcasting. It was Multicultural that was required to take the station off the air. Meanwhile, Nassau Broadcasting moved the 1680 frequency to South Jersey from Princeton. WHWH original Principal was Herbert W. Hobler, for whom the station was named.  During its hey day, the station had very large audiences, throughout Mercer County, and was renowned for its dedication to community service.

Filing Freeze Extended

The FCC has extended the filing freeze on applications for changes in the facilities of Low Power TV Stations, TV Translators and Class A TV Stations.  The rescheduling filing window for these stations to seek Digital Companion Channels is from June 19 through June 30 (original dates were May 1 – 12th.) The freeze is slated to give the fillers time to establish a viable database from which Class A’s can choose companion digital channels.
