RAB
Conference A Sell Out
RAB Prez, Gary Fries convinced many major group heads to
hold their sales and managers meetings before the opening of the RAB Conference. The
result, all of these folks are staying over for the RAB meet
the hotel and overflow
hotels are sold out. QuickNews has always believed that this meeting is the best of all
the national broadcasters meeting and, apparently, the major groups think so as well.
Broadcasters
Testify On Hill
Senator John McCain (R-AZ), chairman of
the Senate Commerce Committee held hearings yesterday in Washington at the request of
Senator Feingold (D-WI). The hearing was
called to challenge the wisdom of radio consolidation and should further broadcast
consolidation continue. Lowery Mays, head of Clear Channel and Eddie Fritts, Prez and CEO of NAB both
testified. In his remarks, Fritts pointed out the benefits of consolidation and told the
committee that there are more than 4,000 individual owner operators of radio stations in
the US, and that many more industries are very much more consolidated than broadcast.
Senator Frank Lautenberg, a member of the committee was still recovering from surgery and
did not attend the meeting. He was expected to make a written statement to the committee,
pointing out how consolidation has helped broadcasters in New Jersey.

Events Reign Supreme
According to a just published report
from RAB, NTR keeps accounting for a larger and larger amount of station billing. Event
marketing leads all other categories of NTR. Event marketing is up 68% over figures 3
years ago and continues to grow. Event programs originate in the sales department at most
stations. Look at the entire study and the results at www.rab.com
