Press
Communications Appeals FCC Decision
The FCC
denied a request from WWZY-FM, Long Branch, to modify the facilities of the station to
permit it to cause agreed upon interference to WKDN-FM in Camden. The FCC denied the
request. Press has asked the FCC to reconsider its request, in light of the fact that the
station will provide greater service to the area, and has the agreement of WKDN. Press
contends that the FCC has misread the rules and requests that the commission reconsider
its position.
Fifth
FCC Commissioner?
Robert
McDowell, a respected Washington FCC Attorney and lobbyist, is expected to be nominated by
President Bush for the fifth seat on the commission. The appointment would bring the
commission up to full strength of 5 members. The Commission has been deadlocked 2 to 2 and
the agenda of Chairman Martin has suffered. McDowell would be the third Republican and
would break the deadlock. McDowell would require Senate Confirmation. The agency has a
full agenda including many telecom issues and a rewrite of the broadcast ownership rules,
which are expected to limit more consolidation.
NJBA
Members Head South To DC
In a few
weeks a delegation of 6 members of NJBA will be participating in the Annual State
Leadership Conference. These delegates volunteer their time to call upon the States
Senators and Congressmen. This is the time for all broadcasters to bring their legislative
issues to the attention of their elected representatives. NJBA has had a delegation going
to Washington for many years and the great work of the participants is acknowledged.
Buy
NJ First
The NJBA
Board of Directors has revitalized the Buy New Jersey First initiative and is
preparing to call on the Governors Office to ask for fairness in the purchase of media.
The committee says advertisers can cover New Jersey better by buying New Jersey stations
first, and adding in New York and Philadelphia stations where necessary, instead of the
other way around. Josh Gertzog of Nassau Broadcasting chairs the effort.
